Marte Aas- Røde Sauer

Røde Sauer (The Influence of Us)(2006)

Røde Sauer(The Influence of Us) is a collaborative project between the rappers in the band Røde Sauer (Red Sheep) and Marte Aas. The project consisted of three large photographic portraits of the rappers Mari, Stina and Mari S on the facade of Oslo Central Station, as well as the music video to Røde Sauer´s Machorap shown in Videogalleriet.

Today's young music scene is dominated by boys in bands. For every young woman in a band, there are about 500 male band members. This disproportionate gender representation is particularly pronounced when it comes to rap music. In addition to this, large parts of the rap genre are full of sexist and discriminatory attitudes. This gender imbalance is also reflected in writings on the history of music, where male artists are cast as the leading protagonists, while female musicians are noted under marginalised categories such as "girl band", "girl rock" or "female singers". By whom and for whom is the history of female musicians written? By establishing spaces where several voices can be heard, I want to focus implicitly on the existing power structures as well as the mechanisms that allow them to prevail. The objective of this project is to critique issues of representation and raise gender-political questions with the aim of writing women back into to the story, so we can create our own historical identity.
