Screens and Hedges

The series Screens and Hedges depict urban structures and the boundaries between private and public spaces. The pictures illustrate how people fence off their houses behind dense thuja hedges. These prevent outsiders from looking in and safeguard the domestic environment. But in many cases they reach higher than the rooves of the houses, closing the private sphere in on itself – almost inducing claustrophobia. Thus these planted boundaries represent a struggle between nature and culture. The pictures show places one walks past every day, but which one fails to notice. At the same time these structures in public space are of great importance for how we unconciously perceive and physically are able to use this space.
