Marte Aas is an artist working with photography, film, installation, and publishing. Her practice explores the relationships between images, technology, history, and landscape, often drawing on archival research, scientific histories, and site-specific investigations.
Her works frequently begin with a historical event, a place, or a material trace, which she develops through research and transforms into films, photographic works, installations, and artist books. Moving between documentary and speculative approaches, she is interested in how images shape our understanding of the world and how histories are constructed, remembered, and retold.
Photography remains central to her practice. Aas is particularly interested in the medium’s material qualities and its relationship to memory, perception, and knowledge. Her recent work has increasingly focused on the entanglement of human and non-human actors, exploring how landscapes, plants, technologies, and other material processes participate in the production of meaning.
Aas studied at the School of Photography at the University of Gothenburg. Her work has been exhibited and screened widely in Norway and internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include Inside the World, Exteriors at Buskerud Art Center (2024) and It Cannot Be Contained at Atelier Nord, Oslo (2023). She is the author of several artist books and a co-founder of the artist-run publishing house Multipress.
